Sun 26th Feb 2012 - 9:51pm
Marc-Olivier "desRow" Proulx is a French-Canadian Professional StarCraft 2 Protoss player currently living in Seoul, South Korea. He has been part of VT Gaming, vVv Gaming, RAGE.eSports and Team Legion. He is currently residing in the GOMTV Foreigner pro house and practicing on the Korean ladder. Let's see what he has to say.
I think many people out there know who you are, but just for the record could you introduce yourself?
desRow: Hi I'm desRow, I'm a Canadian Protoss player and I'm currently living in Seoul South Korea, trying to become one of the best Protoss players on the planet.
How does it feel, living the dream of many people playing StarCraft and trying to become a progamer? Living and playing in Korea of course.
desRow: It was amazing at first, now it's a bit like back home although back home is a bit easier to focus.
How's life in the GOM house in general? Are there many distractions cause of other people playing there?
desRow: The life is good. We have everything provided except for food. Since we don't have a maid to cook the food for us, it is really easy to waste time going out to eat. And cooking food in the apartment is kind of a hassle, we don't have an oven and there's not many western food to buy that doesn't require an oven. As far as other people playing, I don't think that's a distraction. It's more like extra motivation ^_^.
What would you say is the biggest difference in playing on the Korean ladder from playing on EU/NA ladder
desRow: Builds are more refined. On NA ladder during prime time, there's about 50players that are worth playing. On EU there's about 100 players that are worth playing but on KR there's about 200 players that are worth playing 24hours a day not just during prime time, that's the difference.
Does your practice time include just laddering or do you occasionally play with some of the other progamers there? And since we're on the subject who would you say is your toughest opponent so far? Maybe you have a rivalry going on with a certain player there? :)
desRow: Mostly ladder. Before Code A qualifier or if i have showmatches I'll try to find partners but you can get by with only ladder. Toughest opponent would have to be Naniwa, I hit him twice and his builds were extremely refined.
You've recently parted ways with Team Legion, are you currently in search of a new team? Perhaps a Korean pro house?
desRow: Yes and Yes. I'm not actively looking but there's a few options on the table right now. As my skills progress every day, It shouldn't be too long before something happens :).
Good luck with that. Do you guys have any free time aside from your SC practice? What do you do mostly for fun/entertainment there when your not playing.?
desRow: Find new places to eat. There's so many restaurents 10$ of taxi away or 5min of walk away. We've had all sorts of food. Otherwise the guys went to a theme park but I didn't go.
How was 2011, for you and your career?
desRow: 2011 was the start of my career, at first I wasn't sure if sc2 was something I would do full time for long. I gave it a try and streaming allowed me to make it a substainable full time job. I made a few mistakes which people on Reddit love to remind me of. But overall it was a first good year as a "progamer".
How exactly did you get into Starcraft? If i'm not mistaken you've played Warcraft 3 and Dota?
desRow: I played wc3 at the bottom of the semi pro level and I've played dota at the highest level so when sc2 came out I knew it would make e-sports bigger because it was fresh and sponsors would be interested in it.
What are your expectations and hopes for this year?
desRow: To qualify for Code A is my nr.1 expectation. Hopes are that I'll find a suitable team to fly me across the globe to attend events.
What are your opinions on the upcoming patch and the game in it's current state in general? Would you change/add/remove anything?
desRow: The next patch will fix a few things that didn't bother me. Golds are not on tournament maps and mutas are beatable without phoenix, BUT I think it's the right thing to do and it will be one of the last patches before Heart of the Swarm. I believe that whining about imbalance is a pure waste of time and I always try to think about what I could have done better instead of wasting my time complaning.
Are you excited for Heart of the Swarm? How do you think it will affect the game on it's release?
desRow: I'm not really excited because there is so many timings that have yet to be explored in Wings of Liberty. HOTS will make the game a lot more fresh and bring in more players so that's a good thing.
Sticking with toss for the expansion? :)
desRow: Of course ^_ ^
Thanks for your time once again Desrow for this interview. Any shoutouts ?
