Interview With coL Rocket League Captain - al0t

Linus 'al0t' Möllergren is a Professional Rocket League player and team captain for compLexity Gaming. He began his Rocket League career in 2015 and has played for other notable teams like Method and Run'n'Hide before being picked up by compLexity.

You joined up with compLexity Gaming earlier this year. What has that been like for you so far and what were the initial steps that took place in joining up/being picked up by the organization? 

al0t: The initial steps of getting picked up by compLexity was just a lot of back and forth, getting to know the people behind the organization and the future both parties could bring each other. So far it has been absolutely amazing. The support and insight that they provide for their players is no doubt one of a kind. We're all being treated as a huge family and that's how it should be.

What does it personally mean to you to not only be part of such a well-known organization, but to also be a team captain? 

al0t: Being a part of compLexity is a dream come true, knowing you always have people around you that has your back at all times, even during rough times. They're my second family and I couldn't be happier. Most of my career, even in another esports games, I've been a team captain. My motto has always been 'team first, myself after'. Having people like gReazy and Mognus on the team makes my job as a team captain so much easier. They help me in getting scrims, they're on time everytime, and we're all very understanding when it comes to taking and giving critique. We don't let feelings get in the way of what we're trying to accomplish together because we're very passionate about winning and since we're playing under a great organization. We want to make them proud as well.

You’ve personally taken both 2nd and 3rd in the RLCS Finals. What steps are you taking in hopes of raising that 1st Place trophy?

al0t: Don't get me wrong, 2nd and 3rd at the finals are amazing results, but we don't compete to get 2nd or 3rd, we play to win everything. We felt a need of change in the team after Season 4 of RLCS and decided to pick up gReazy because we felt that he's an amazing player with and incredible hunger to win. We feel that with this roster, raising that trophy is just a matter of time. 

You and compLexity took 3rd in the RLCS 5 Finals. How do you personally feel you and the team performed and what did you learn to use moving forward?

al0t: Getting 3rd was mixed feelings for me personally, knowing we got 2nd at the last LAN but also realizing we lost to the teams that went into finals and had the best Grand Finals in RLCS history made it feel a little better. During Day 1 and Day 2 personally I think we performed extremely well. Obviously on Day 3 we played NRG first and got swept 4-0. We didn't play our game at all and we had to focus on regrouping after that series for prepare for the next one. We played Dignitas in the Lower-Finals and the performance was way better than versus NRG, but we still couldn't close it out and ended up losing 4-2. 

What does training look like for you and the team now that RLCS is upon us? Has the volume of play increased or stayed about the same?

al0t: We try to play around 3-4 hours a day of just ranked and then we usually scrim for around 2 hours against top teams. The volume of play usually increases before and during a RLCS season, but at the end of the day it's about quality time put in the game, not quantity. 

How would you personally describe the chemistry between you, Mognus, and gReazy? Do you guys ever butt heads or is it mostly smooth sailing?

al0t: Me and Mognus have had great chemistry for a really long time and with the addition of gReazy it was just a thought of how fast will gReazy fit in fully and for everyone to be comfortable with eachother. So far gReazy fits in pretty well and we have huge potential for the future. Outside of the game we never argue or butt heads with each other, even when we lose. It's a very civil and mature environment.

What other teams do you love playing against? Any other players that you’re personally a big fan of?

al0t: The team to beat is obviously Dignitas and Dignitas is the team that I love to play against so if we win, it's a Win-Win situation. A player that I've been a huge fan of for almost two years now is definitely GarrettG. I really respect his attitude in the game and out of the game. He's an incredible player to watch and a very good friend of mine. 

What has been your personal favorite moment of your professional Rocket League career?

al0t: So far, my personal favorite moment has to be upper finals of RLCS Season 4 in Washington versus Gale Force (now Dignitas). Game 6 goes into overtime for over 6 and a half minutes, where I pass Mognus and he absolutely clangers it into their net. We ended up losing that tournament ending up with 2nd place, but definitely my favorite memory of Rocket League so far.
 

If you had a conversation with someone who had just picked up Rocket League for the first time, what tips would you give them if they told you that they wanted to be as good as you one day?

al0t: Focus on yourself, not others. The only person that can hinder improvement is yourself, nobody else. In the beginning, just play the game until you get a hang of everything, then you can focus on mechanics and game-sense. If you're playing on a controller, change your settings to what makes you feel the best. My suggestion is changing up your air-roll and power-slide buttons early to either L1 or R1 as early as you can because when I did that, I improved massively pretty fast because I felt I had way more freedom of what I was doing. 
 

For the last question, something easy!  When not playing video games/Rocket League, what else does al0t enjoy doing?  If you could be a professional in any other game or field, what would you choose?

al0t: I try to go to the gym 3-5 times a week and when I don't do that, I honestly just sit at my PC and talk to friends and/or watch Youtube. Not really the most exciting life outside of Rocket League, but I like it like that. I was always interested in CS:GO before Rocket League and I was in a "semi-pro" team in 2015, with decent results against other semi-pro teams. So I'd probably go for CS:GO if Rocket League wasn't an option.
