We had a chance to talk to John "SenseiGaming" Kim about his massive project for the "University of Starcraft" over on Reddit, and got to know more about his motivations, the coaches confirmed at this point, and potential complications.
What was the main motivation and reasoning in undertaking a large project like this?
Sensei: I have always thought about ways I could work in the esports industry ever since the release of Starcraft II. Originally, I wanted to reach Grand Master first to prove my relevance not only to myself but also the community. However, with my work schedule and other obligations that I have to meet, I realized the amount of time and dedication to reach that goal was impractical. My motivation to start an "Official Starcraft Strategy" came from an interview I heard day[9] do a while back at the CSL Finals, which can be found here. Sean, day[9], explains that there are no real positions in esports and that you must create your own job.
When the University of Reddit opened I knew it was a great opportunity to give back to the community that has provided me with something more than just an occasional entertainment, but really a lifestyle. Not only is the project to invite new players who have been interested in starting but may have been intimidated by the complex strategies, but also assist current players to refine their skills. Most of all I realized I see some of the most insightful material from obscure players all the time in forums/subreddits. Therefore, I wanted to give more exposure to up and coming players who deserved more attention. I hope this will be an avenue for them to help out the community and get their names known at the same time.
Were you expecting this amount of people to signup, and what changes would you make if this continues to grow in size?
Sensei: To be honest, I was expecting more people to join because I thought I would be the first person to create the class however, I was the third person to create a dedicated class towards Starcraft. The only reason I went through with it was because my vision for it seemed different from what the other two were promoting. Although I am surprised that people have continued to join mine, I have been working diligently to get in contact with the right people to help collaborate and create a great community so I guess the old saying "hard work pays off" really shows here.
Because this is so new, I am not sure what I would do differently if this continues to grow in size. I am in the works of implementing a 1 on 1 coaching session, which will give more opportunities to the members in the community and also benefit those who learn better with a personal tutor.
How will your coaches, being very high Masters or GMs, deal with the significant skill difference between them and newer players?
Sensei: We will be offering classes that have something for everyone. From Introduction of Starcraft, which presents each race and their abilities, to breaking down of advanced plays from pro gamers. Having high masters and GM players by my side, I do not have to worry about any of the coaches/teachers giving bad advice to newer players. My goal is for everyone of every skill level to be able to tune into the classes at least 2x a week, just like an actual University that offers 101 classes as well as advanced courses.
You have already confirmed Complexity Academy's Sasquatch, QuanticDecemvre, and yourself as the coaches thus far. Can you give a hint as to who may be joining you on the Terran side?
Sensei: I do not plan on coaching myself. I may have to in the beginning because we may not have enough coaches or I will probably have to step in if someone cannot make it, but ideally I would like to be the person behind the scenes. I have been talking to a few Protoss and Terran coaches but nothing has been confirmed. It will be announced in the class updates when I can get the final response.
Did you expect Sasquatch to have his phenomenal MLG run?
Sensei: I believe a lot of people know col.Sasquatch is a good player, especially those who know him from the reddit community. However, it was definitely unexpected to see such an amazing run. Although EGIdra hasn't posted the best results, I know that he is a strong player that builds off his wins. EGIdra must have felt really good after his win against LGIMFirst. For col.Sasquatch to beat EGIdra after his huge confidence boost is nothing to overlook. It is a huge accomplishment and I would like to say I cannot wait to see how much he evolves in the near future. Did I mention he beat Goody before that? What a boss.
It's relatively easy to find new builds or tutorials focused on newer players; what will this offer that no other resource would be able to?
Sensei: The reason why I believe Official Starcraft II Strategy is unique is because we are offering perspectives from all different types of players. I frequently look to day[9] for his ability to teach and entertain at the same time. However, day[9] is only one person and although he is extremely knowledgeable, it is difficult for one person to know every trick in the game especially with all 3 races. Since we have community members like day[9] that have some of the best insights, I thought it would be a great idea to consolidate all available information and expand it to be used effectively. I believe that an organized "College" structure will help bring a lot of new people to the game. Imagine you could tell your friend who is intimidated by Starcraft or has no idea about it, that there are free class sessions taught by legitimate players. It's definitely something I would look forward to every week.
In teaching the middle to top level students, what kinds of strategies and concepts will the coaches be focusing on?
Sensei: If you visit the site, I have already posted what to expect in each level. If we are speaking to only middle level players, we may focus on concepts like scouting and reading your opponents and basic ways on how to respond. On top level students, we would focus on very specific concepts and situations. Recently I saw LGIMSeed do a PvT build against FXOGumiho that focused on getting a ton of gates off 3 bases, defend aggression all while getting double upgrades. You can tell this is a well thought out build because LGIMSeed was able to get both forges and zealot charge upgrade at the same time. He also knew exactly how many units that were needed to defend his 3rd base. His plan unfolded perfectly and with superior macro and upgrades with his meticulous initial set up, he easily won the game. I would like our coaches to analyze and break down complex builds for advanced players.
Any final words for our readers?
Sensei: Thank you everyone who continues to support my efforts and please continue to look forward to the updates. Until classes start, I will provide as much content and as many outside resources as possible until the courses are up and running.
