Warding Over Walls In The New Summoner's Rift

The ward is an extremely valuable tool in League of Legends that can give you a large advantage over your opponent. In some areas of the map, you have the ability place a ward over an extremely thick wall. To properly place any of these wards, simply walk as close as possible to the wall, and drop the ward in the designated area.

The Sidelane River Bush Ward: This involves dropping a ward into the side lane river bush from over the wall. It can be done in the top lane from the blue side jungle, and in the bot lane from the purple side jungle. This is a safe way to obtain vision of this bush if there is fear that the enemy jungler is around.

The Midlane Jungle Entrance Ward: This ward can be utilized to get defensive vision of the entrance into the jungle near the wolf camp. This can also be used to gain vision of the opposing jungle entrance after the enemy outer turret in the midlane is taken down.

The Red Buff Ward: This ward can be done to gain vision of the bush on the opposite side of the wall at red buff. One can utilize this ward if they fear the enemy team might be waiting in that bush. It is a particularly useful ward to place if you are on purple side and the enemy team has vision control of that area, as it is a popular bush to camp in an attempt to pick off a member of your team.

The Tribush Ward: The dreaded tribush ward. On the old Summoner's Rift, this ward was the most difficult one to place. It seems on the new map, Riot has made a conscious decision to make this ward unreliable and virtually impossible under normal conditions. As you can see in the image below, the geometry changes to the new map have a triangular rock jutting into the bush which pushes wards to the left or right of the bush without actually granting vision inside. You can still place the ward if you use the scout mastery, which increases the cast range of trinket wards by 15%, or if you are on a champion such as Riven or Leblanc who can use gap closers to get closer to the wall than most other champions.

The Krugs to Red Bush Ward: This involves dropping a ward from over the wall at the Krugs camp into the bush just outside the red buff camp. This is a very useful ward that can be used for a few different purposes. If your team aims to invade the enemy red buff level one, and you successfully come in through their tribush, you can place this ward and see if there are any enemies waiting there to defend the red buff. It can also be used defensively. For instance, if the enemy jungler has invaded and is currently taking your red, he has likely pulled it into the bush in question. This is a safe way to gain vision of the enemy without putting yourself at risk.

The Top Tower to River Bush Ward: With this you can actually place a ward from tower range into the river bush on blue side. If the enemy top laner has pushed the minion wave towards your tower and you fear that the enemy jungler may be lurking about, this ward can be very useful and in some cases may save your life. Keep in mind, this is a very difficult ward to place. When I started using it, I frequently missed. I found that I have the highest degree of success when I lock my camera and position myself as shown by the blue circle, then simply unlock my camera once the ward is placed. It is highly recommended that you practice placing this ward in a custom match before you bring it into your ranked games!

The Bot Tower To River Bush Ward: With my discovery of the topside version of this ward spot I became increasingly curious as to whether or not it was possible to place this ward on bot side. I had no such luck placing a regular sight ward in the bush from the same position on purple side bot, however if you have the scout mastery, you can place a trinket ward in bush with ease. *Note: The red circle where you must place the ward on is only possible due to the utilization of the scout mastery. While this decreases the usefulness of the ward, you might still find a use for it if you are a support on purple side and have not yet sold your warding totem for a sweeping lens.

Wrapping Things Up: Learning these ward spots will provide you with another valuable tool to add to your belt. In some cases, warding in this manner rather than walking directly up to the bush will not only be safer, but will also save you and the other members of your team time. It may be these few seconds that you save that makes the difference and leads to an advantage for your team. I hope you find these warding tricks as useful as I did, and until next time, I'll see you on the rift.
