A Season of Thought: Stories from Other Gamers

With the season finally coming to a close, it’s time to get back to our roots. Why do we play this game? Some for fun! Some for glory! Some probably don’t have a single idea why we play this game, but then I watch Worlds. Then I watch season 3 Worlds, and season 2, and I realize that I play this game because of change. It’s one of the only games that I play that every month or so is different.

I can personally remember when the meta was boots pots and there would be around 8 players a game that would start that. I remember when the top lane meta was red pot push wave hit lvl 2 all in. That was not a fun meta to play in (*cough cough* Riven *cough cough*). And now, the meta is getting ready to change once again, and I’m excited. That’s why I play this game, but some people don’t, and it confuses me why people wouldn’t want to play a game that changes all the time, so I asked. I asked some people I know: someone who has really never played League, and someone who played League, moved to DotA, and is now back on League.

Jake is my best friend, yet the only bit of League he’s ever played was the tutorial, and he quit in the middle of even that. I asked him a few questions to get his impression on the game.

How do you win a game of League?

Jake: Isn’t it by destroying the nexus or something like that?

Who’s the best champion in the game?

Jake: I have no clue haha.

Can you name or describe any of the champions?

Jake: There are some male ones, some female ones, and some scary ones but that’s about it.

Who’s the best pro team in the game?

Jake: Probably some Korean team. (Writer's note: I informed him that he wasn’t wrong there.)

Does the game look fun?

Jake: It looks fun if you know what you’re doing. People seem to really get into it.

If you know what you're doing...

How do you feel the game’s community is? Are they kind and inviting or just a bunch of jerks?

Jake: Yeah, they seem really nice and inviting. (Writer's note: I actually laughed out loud on this one.)

Would you consider trying the game again sometime?

Jake: Maybe! But you have to beat me in FIFA first! (Writer's note: So this means he won’t be playing the game anytime soon.)

The next person I talked to is my friend Sawyer. Sawyer played League like a maniac during season 3 and the beginning of season 4, then he moved to play DotA, and now he’s back playing both, yet he prefer’s DotA over League.

The Ancient from DotA, aka DotA's Nexus

Why did you stop playing League and start playing DotA?

Sawyer: I started to get bored of league in the middle of the summer. I had kept playing solo queue to try and get from Silver I to Gold, but I always lost my promos. Being fed up with ranked, I started only playing normals. I got bored of normals soon enough, and decided to try DotA 2 when my friend asked me to try it with him. I instantly fell in love with it, and now I play it more than League. What really got me into DotA was watching The International 4.

So do you like both games still?

Sawyer: Yeah, I still enjoy both games but DotA is my preference.

Why do you prefer DotA over League?

Sawyer: I don’t know how to answer that. I guess because farm is more important, I like the whole steam market community and the whole mod process. I like some of the custom maps you can make in DotA, and I how they remade League. And I like the fact that you don’t have to grind for heroes like you do for champions.

If Riot changed League to be exactly like DotA for the most part, would you go back primarily playing League?

Sawyer: I like the heroes more than the champions do probably not, but I would definitely start playing League a whole lot more.

A Season of Thought: Stories from Other Gamers

So there we have it. Two people telling two different stories. I wish that more people agreed with me on how League is the best game in the world, but as long as I’m not the only person in the world, it won’t be. Why don’t you go ahead and tell me what you think about League, DotA, and even FIFA over on Twitter @chad_bubbles and you might as well follow me while you’re there so you can receive all my updates on my new to come puppies!

Until next time!
