Picking Your Role in the League of Legends!

If you are generally new to League of Legends and you find yourself wondering about what role you should play, it can be a quite a daunting thing to try and pick a role and lane, and a specific champion pool for them. For example, would you prefer carry jungles, such as Vi? Or maybe a support junglers, like Maokai?

Now generally I find that looking at other games you play that kind of involve a classing system or games where there are roles, like Planetside 2 or World of Warcraft, any game along those lines, look at how you play, and interact with the game, are you aggresive and love to run in without caring about taking damage? Or do you prefer to hang at the back of the of the group and deal damage to your enemies? Once you are done looking at these aspects of your play style preference you need to decide whether to stick with what you know, or venture into parts of the game that dont fit your normal way of playing. This gives you that foothold in trying to figure out where and what you want to do.

Once you have gotten to a point where you have seen what and where you want to play, you can start looking into the champion pool that does well in this specific area of the game. I prefer to play the support/tank jungle role, champions like Maokai and Amumu. These are champions that don't do a lot of damage, but tend to do better at stopping your opponent from escaping or turning on your ally and killing them instead, and in some cases also make it easier to take your opponent down.

A good example of this is Maokai's W ability, Twisted Advance. This ability allows Maokai to close the gap almost instantly and also stuns the enemy for a brief period, the same happens with Amumu's Bandage Toss ability. Comparing play style and abilities to other games you have played in the past may also help you pick out certain champions you could be good with, as certain mechanics and abilities that the champions have may suit you well and you can use them, this is all just to start with, you will learn to play all the champions for that specific role in time.

After you have all of these down, it's time to look up the champion or champions you have chosen to learn first, now don't feel bad about this, I have a heard a couple of people say that looking at builds and sites that give hints a tips about how to play a champion in a role, is cheating. In my honest opinion, this is wrong. Looking at builds is a way to learn the champion and how to play them, without taking them into a game and having no clue what to do or where to go, potentially causing your team to lose and getting flamed for it.

I believe that builds and tutorials can help you learn a champion faster and sometimes better than just playing, allowing you to use them to their fullest potential. Once you have the champion down to a decent level, you can start testing things out and veering away from a specific build mixing it up and learning as you go.

I generally look at and follow builds for the first few games I play a champion, and then I will start to slowly change items out and see what would work and what wouldn't. It is a good way to learn the game on a new level and allows you to further familiarize yourself with the game as a whole, as well as the position you have picked out. Take note however, that this is not a short process. This is a task that will take a fair few games worth of playing to achieve to get the kind of understanding you need to truly say you have mastered the champion. Nothing happens straight away, so stick with it, and you will be rewarded for your time!

Once you have gotten used to your role and position and have a decent champion pool to boot, it's down to you where you go from there, try out other roles and positions? Or master all the champions that do well in your position and become the best you can at the specific role and lane. Either way expect fun times as well as rage induced rants about how over powered something is. Good Luck!
