Introduction:

This will be a guide that will look into the basics of using Molotovs. Molotovs can be used in many situations for the Counter-Terrorist and Terrorist side. I will do my best to convey my thoughts on these subjects, as well as show a strategy that has been used in competitive play using Molotovs.

Terrorists:

Molotovs have many uses on the Terrorist side on Counter-Strike. They can be used to execute specific strategies and clear out Counter-Terrorists from Bombsites. An example of a map that Molotov’s are very good on for Terrorists is Cache. The reason Cache is so good for Molotovs is because a lot of the angle's Counter-Terrorists hold are passive and bait the Terrorists to push forward into them. The main use Terrorists have for Molotovs is to root out Counter-Terrorists from their hiding spots. A good example of this is, when on Boost in Mid on Cache, a player will normally throw a Molotov towards Sandbags to check if there is a Counter-Terrorists playing in that position. Below I have images showing how to throw this Molotov. It is very straightforward and you get up on boost and throw at the corner of the wall above Sandbags.

This can be used and is used on all the other maps in the competitive pool. Other examples range from the corner on B Plat on Cobblestone where a Counter-Terrorist can position himself when they smoke off B Plat. Triple Box on A Site of the map Mirage as well. The main reason to use Molotovs is to give your team an advantage. Using Molotovs, force the Counter-Terrorists to move out of cover which enables you to kill them and give your team and advantage. The example I have shown below is of a Molotov being thrown into the Vents position on Cache. When throwing this Molotov run forward while throwing.

Counter-Terrorists:

Molotovs are more expensive on the Counter-Terrorist side, but if you have a comfortable economy it is always good to have one for choke points and retakes. Molotovs are really good at stopping rushes. For example, on a map like Mirage you can hear the sound cues in Apartments and see if Terrorists are rushing. Throwing down a Molotov will either cause the Terrorist force to stop and slow down their strategy or, they will push through it taking a lot of damage giving your team an advantage. Below I have pictures showing a retake Molotov on the A Bombsite of Mirage.

Saving a Molotov for a retake is good on pretty much all the competitive maps. Molotovs are especially good for retakes on these maps because of the way the Bombsites are set up. The A and B sites for these maps all have choke points and areas where Terrorists hide waiting for the right time to peek. Gaining better positions in a retake is a very important matter. When you Molotov off a section of the Bombsite you not only may catch someone in that position, but also clear an area and move forward onto the Bombsite. Below are pictures showing how to throw a Molotov onto the A Bombsite of Dust II that covers the site and default plant position. When throwing this Molotov move forward.

Set Strategies:

One strategy that is commonly used in pro play is to completely cover the B Bombsite on Cache with Molotov's to force the Counter-Terrorists out of position. I have pictures below showing three different Molotov's that will land in the back corner, the center of the Bombsite and on Headshot. There is always at least one Counter-Terrorists on the B Bombsite and the Molotovs force him off the Bombsite. After the Molotovs you want to flash through the Sunroom window and push into site quickly. This is to catch the Counter-Terrorist as soon as he is trying to re-position. This will quickly give your team the advantage while taking the Bombsite. Remember the basics like using Flashbangs when entering the Bombsite and a smoke to cover Tree Room. This strategy only takes three Molotovs and if your team has five Molotovs you are able to delay the pushes from Tree room and Heaven. A big weakness to this strategy is the setup since one player will be visible from checkers it is important to have at least one teammate watching that position, or if the Counter-Terrorists throw a deep smoke go for it quickly. Below are the pictures showing how to throw the three Molotovs in this strategy. The first set will show the back corner, the next set will show the middle of the site and the third set will show the Headshot position.

Conclusion:

This was a look into the many ways to use Molotovs effectively. On the Terrorists side Molotovs are inexpensive enough that they could be bought on most rounds. For Counter-Terrorists they are more expensive and could be bought most rounds, but can take an economical toll. Hope this guide looking at Molotovs was helpful for you and/or your team.
