Introduction

It can be ever so boring just shooting people over and over again. You may think that hopping into a game of deathmatch is the only way to increase your skill. You couldn't be anymore wrong. In fact some people say that deathmatching all the time will make you worse at the game as it wears you out. Luckily there are alternative ways to get better at CSGO. Some of them can even be fun to the point that you're there for hours on end without realising. Below I will list some of these game modes for you to try out for yourself.

Surf

Surfing is incredibly fun and stupidly addictive. It can also increase your skill in various different ways. First of all there are two different variants of surfing. 'Skill surf' and 'Surf arena'. Of course if you are new to surf there are various tutorials on the Team-Dignitas website that can get you learning the game mode. 'Skill surf' is as it states. Surf maps that require a lot of skill and learning various routes to finish the maps. The maps often have timers and leaderboards for people to compete against each other for the best time. It requires a lot of intricate movement to increase speed and time on the maps. With this comes you increasing your movement skills. You can learn to master strafing and increase your movement. When first looking for 'Skill surf' servers try and find a 'Tier 1' server as these are the easiest and will get you straight into learning how to surf.

Movement can help you win gun battles in certain scenarios as you can move and shoot at the same time. This is where 'Surf arena' comes into play. 'Surf arena' is also self explanatory. You surf while deathmatching. The maps aren't as intricate as' Skill surf' but they require strafe skills in combination with aiming. You have to try and shoot people while surfing which can be very difficult. The difficulty is good though as there is a skill ladder you need to climb. If you become good at surfing and shooting people, then you can become good at shooting people that are on normal surfaces. Do not ever change your sensitivity when playing surf. It will completely remove the whole point of playing aim servers and surf is to keep muscle memory. If you change your sensitivity you will not have that muscle memory and will make you worse, not better!

KZ

'Kreedz climb' is a very frustrating and annoying game mode. There's a reason that it's frustrating. That's because it can be hard. The skills that it will increase is once again, your movement. You need movement to reach certain areas on maps like 'Mirage' has a few skill jumps that require strafing. Using these skills can get you in these areas which leads to outplaying the enemy. Getting into KZ can be hard as at first it may seem really difficult. But once you get used to it, it can be a lot of fun. There are maps that can take hours to complete in one sitting. It may seem like a long time but throughout this whole time you are increasing your movement skills without realising. You will start to get better at the maps and begin to increase your times.

When joining a KZ server try and search for ones that say 'Beginner' or 'Tier 1'. These maps will be the easier maps for beginners. You can of course try and join a harder server but this will most likely lead to frustration and will make you want to quit rather than keep on trying.

1v1

A very chill game mode that you can sit back, relax and pop heads. 1v1 servers are very very self explanatory. You have an aim battle against 1 other person. During this you will learn how to aim a lot better and learn where to pre-aim from certain areas and heights. Some servers even operate variants of official maps from the Valve map pool. There are various different weapons you can use as well. More often than not the server will provide you with a selection menu where you can choose what weapons you want. You can pick to have rifle 1v1, pistol 1v1 or AWP only 1v1. This means you can practice any weapon you want in a 1v1 scenario. This can increase your pin-point accuracy as you have to try and out-aim your opponent by playing from tricky angles. If you have played KZ and Surf before as well, you can outmove them. By using your combined aim and movement you should be able to reach the top pretty early on.

Aim deathmatch

Again this will increase your aiming skills. It's like a combination of deathmatch and 1v1 servers where there are custom made maps. The maps will often be long range and require precision accuracy. Again you can choose to use pistols or a rifle but not an AWP. Bear in mind that this is like deathmatch when the opponents can have any weapon they want, so it won't always be a fair battle. It's up to you what you want to practice though. Playing on these servers will again increase your pinpoint accuracy to be able to outaim people in actual matches. It will also teach you where to pre-aim as you will want your crosshair to be on the enemies head before you even see them.

Finding servers

To join custom servers you will want to click 'Play' -> 'Browse community servers'. Here you can see a full list of the servers that are currently running. If you click 'Change filters' at the bottom left you are able to input filters. Here you can input tags to find game modes easier. If you know the game mode uses a certain map type you can also type that into the 'Maps' text box. As an example if you type 'Surf_' into the text box you will be shown surf maps.

Another way to find servers is to use a website called 'Gametracker'. On this website you can select to search for CSGO servers then input the tags or specific maps. This will again show a list of servers. In the 'Matching' text box you can input what game mode you want and it will bring up servers that have that game mode on them. This makes it a lot easier to find specific game modes and servers that are rated as the best from the community.

Conclusion

Getting better at the game doesn't require as much straining as you probably initially thought. It can definitely be a fun and different learning experience. There are of course, different game modes that can also help you get better at the game but these 4 are the ones that I primarily used and find the best worked for me.

Thanks for reading and I hope I helped in some way.
