What Type Of Gamer Are You?

In the 1950's, a theory was created outlining two main types of personality a person can have. These were labelled as Type A and Type B personalities.

Type A

The theory describes a Type A individual as ambitious, proactive, can be sensitive and are often high achievers who can multi task and want to win at all costs, doing whatever they can to succeed. They are usually driven by rewards and a sense of self fulfillment when completing a task.  They can have high stress levels brought upon by the need to win.  If managed, that can be a very powerful thing.

Type B

The theory describes a Type B individual as a the opposite to those with a Type A personalities. People with Type B personality generally have lower stress levels and typically work at a steady pace. They also do enjoy achievement however are not stressed if failing to do so. When faced with competition they do not mind losing and can enjoy a game no matter what the outcome is.

Some would argue that a person can have traits from both types. This is true, I for example want to win at all costs but I do not rage or get stressed if I lose. That would give me a Type AB personality.                                         What Type Of Gamer Are You?

What does this have to do with gaming you ask?

Take a look again at the examples of the personality traits and compare the qualities to any pro gamer of your choice, you might find that most successful gamers are mainly of a Type A personality, primarily from the fact that they want to win at all costs and will do what they can to win.

However, some of the traits from Type B would also be very useful in the high stress environment of professional gaming. The reflective nature of someone with Type B would also be useful in the professional gaming environment. It would be perfect for thinking up strategies and managing their own personal development.

Self evaluation in my opinion is massively important when competing at such a high level in anything. Whether it be in sports or gaming having the ability to critique your own performance can give a player a massive advantage against their opposition. Team mates and manages will evaluate your performance but they could hold back on some points because they might not want to discourage you in the future. If you can identify them yourself...well its much easier being mad at yourself than being mad at a team mate and saying something that you could regret.

Try it for yourself

What do you think is the most effective personality type to have when in the professional gaming world?  Is it Type A, Type B or a mixture of both?  If you choose a mixture of both, please explain why.  I would love to hear your response.

This is not the only theory out there and I am no psychologist, so don't go diagnosing people with personality disorders based on my interpretation!
