Team Dignitas’ HGC Preview: Week 4

Fri 9th Feb 2018 - 7:00am

The win streak continues! Team Dignitas come out of Week 3 with another 3-0 victory, making their current standing 12-0. They are sitting pretty at the top of the pack but this upcoming week has some very important matchups that Team Dignitas cannot afford to lose if they want to make it to Western Clash in March. Fnatic is right behind them in the standings and the two teams face off this weekend.

Week 3’s games seemed like a breeze for Team Dignitas. Their draft did change up a bit from the previous weeks, as most notably they used Blaze in the Main Tank role with Jérôme “JayPL” Trinh playing him. Before that, Blaze was another solo-laner for Jonathan “Wubby” Gunnarsson, but Week 3 showed us that Blaze could operate very well in both roles. Blaze is hovering around a 31% involvement rate in EU, which is relatively low, but he will likely continue to climb as the weeks go on.

Team Dignitas vs. Team Liquid - Friday, February 9th at 11:00 am PST / 8:00 pm CET

Wubby is hailed as the best solo-laner in EU, having been a prominent member during his Fnatic days and now a crucial part of the success of the current Team Dignitas roster. Team Liquid’s Aleksandar “ethernal” Milanov is almost a solo-lane specialist, having played on Diamond Skin/Playing Ducks previously.

The current solo-lane meta is seeing the disappearance of Sonya due to nerfs to her kit and the rise of Blaze. Still, the most commonly picked and banned solo-lane Hero is Dehaka. His global ability and reliably effective lane clear make him irresistible. But if a team knows they won’t be able to claim Dehaka for themselves, the other alternatives depend on the battleground and the team composition.

Team Dignitas have a large pool they pull from when choosing solo-lane Heroes. At times they have used Tyrael, Ragnaros, and Blaze, which are a bit uncommon. They also seem to be one of the few teams who make effective use of their Leoric picks, having picked him 3 times thus far with a 100% win rate.

Team Liquid have picked up Malthael quite a bit as an adaptation to the Sonya nerfs, as well as Arthas and Leoric, and even a rare Tyrael. They have yet to embrace Blaze as other teams have, so perhaps this series we will see Team Liquid try to take over Blaze priority from Team Dignitas.

Team Dignitas vs. Fnatic - Saturday, February 10th at 9:00 am PST / 6:00 pm CET

This is the most highly anticipated series Team Dignitas has in Group Stage 1. Anytime Team Dignitas and Fnatic face off it's exciting. At GCWC, Team Dignitas took down Fnatic 3-0 in the Lower Bracket Finals. Now that both teams have had time to adjust to their new rosters, this match-up will really show who is the current best in Europe. Team Dignitas are heading into this series undefeated, while Fnatic have had some rough games but still hold 2nd place in the rankings with a strong 4-1.

What better showdown than between the former Team Dignitas player and EU Mage God, Thomas “Mene” Cailleux, against Vilhelm “POILK” Flennmark, the new Team Dignitas Mage and Assassin player. So far this season Mene has been leaning pretty hard on Kael’thas with great results. Of course, his Gul’dan is not too far behind. What is interesting is that we have seen Mene branching out even more from the Mage pool, having played some Hanzo, Genji, and Tracer.

Meanwhile, POILK already has a stable footing on heroes such as Tracer, Greymane, and Genji. His Mage play thus far has focused mainly on Li-Ming. In the draft, it could be worthwhile for Team Dignitas to take Mene off his comfort Mage heroes, since Fnatic doesn’t seem to play Genji much and perhaps forcing Mene onto Genji could work in Team Dignitas' favour. Fnatic also ban Genji quite a bit, possibly because they don’t feel 100% comfortable playing him yet in their compositions, but also because Genji is a menace in the hands of most other teams.
